Highlighting the growing challenges of freshwater availability in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) organized a Water Concert under the tagline ‘Every Drop Counts’ to raise public awareness on water conservation and responsible usage.

Despite being surrounded by the ocean, the islands depend on limited freshwater resources, which are increasingly under pressure due to rapid urbanization, changing lifestyles and the impacts of climate change. Addressing these concerns, APWD has been implementing sustained measures to strengthen water supply infrastructure across the islands, including the promotion of rainwater harvesting, augmentation of storage capacity and efforts to ensure efficient and equitable water distribution in both urban and rural areas.

Officials emphasized that while infrastructure development is crucial, water security cannot be achieved without active public participation. Community awareness, responsible individual behaviour and collective action were highlighted as equally important components in safeguarding this vital resource.

As part of its outreach initiatives, the Water Concert creatively used music and cultural expressions to connect with the public and convey the importance of water conservation. The programme encouraged citizens to adopt simple yet effective practices such as fixing leaking taps, using water judiciously, protecting natural water bodies, reusing water wherever possible and adopting water-efficient habits at homes and workplaces. The slogan ‘Jab Jal Rahega Tabhi Toh Hamara Kal Rahega’ resonated strongly with the audience, reinforcing water’s role as the foundation of life and a secure future.

The event was attended by the Special Secretary (PWD), Councillors of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council and a large number of members of the general public. A water conservation pledge was administered, along with a signature campaign, reaffirming collective commitment towards responsible water use.

The Water Concert served as a reminder that water is a shared heritage and its conservation is a responsibility owed to future generations. APWD reiterated that through sustained awareness, collective effort and responsible practices, long-term water security can be ensured for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, preserving their fragile ecology and natural wealth.
