In a significant step towards strengthening water conservation awareness among young learners, the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), A&N Administration, conducted a training programme for Master Trainers at the conference hall of the Chief Engineer’s Office, APWD. The initiative aimed at equipping teachers with the knowledge and tools required to sensitise school children on the importance of conserving water.

The training programme witnessed participation from one teacher each from Government and private schools in the Headquarters area. Welcoming the participants, Mr. Jose P. John, Assistant Engineer, APWD, explained the objectives of the programme and highlighted the pivotal role children can play as ambassadors of water conservation. He noted that awareness imparted at a young age not only influences students but also extends to their families and communities, creating a wider impact.

Dr. Arun Kumar, Superintending Engineer (Planning), APWD, delivered an informative PowerPoint presentation on the challenges related to water usage and the urgent need for conservation. He outlined practical measures for saving water and introduced participants to various formats of water auditing. A simplified water audit format was distributed to all teachers to facilitate data collection on water consumption in schools and households.

Dr. Arun Kumar further urged teachers to inculcate habits of water reuse and conservation among students and suggested integrating short awareness talks on water-saving practices during morning assemblies to reinforce daily behavioural change.

Concluding the programme, Ms. Sudha Dixit of GMS Corbyn’s Cove summarised the key learnings of the training and assured that efforts would be made to motivate students to conduct water audits and adopt conservation practices in their daily routines.

In his closing remarks, the Public Grievance Officer expressed gratitude to the Director of Education and the heads of educational institutions for their support and for permitting teachers to attend the programme. The initiative marks an important step towards empowering educators as change agents in promoting sustainable water management and conservation among future generations.
