Sri Vijaya Puram | December, 30 2025
As part of an initiative to provide experiential learning and exposure to the unique geography of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, around 400 students from the Nicobar District will embark on an educational excursion to Barren Island on December 31, 2025.
The students, drawn from various schools across the district, include 100 from Campbell Bay, 148 from Nancowry and 150 from Car Nicobar. All students have reached Sri Vijaya Puram to avail the sailing of MV Swaraj Dweep for the onward journey to Barren Island. They are accompanied by 16 escort teachers to ensure proper supervision, safety and guidance throughout the tour.
The educational excursion has been organised by the Directorate of Education, Sri Vijaya Puram, with the objective of offering students a rare opportunity to witness and understand the geographical and ecological significance of Barren Island. The return journey is scheduled for January 3, 2026, following a brief stay at Sri Vijaya Puram.
Extensive arrangements have been made by the Directorate of Education to ensure safe travel and suitable accommodation for both students and escort teachers. The initiative holds particular importance for students from the far-flung southern group of islands, many of whom seldom get opportunities to travel beyond their native islands for educational exposure.
The Zonal Officers of the three zones, along with parents, students and teachers of the Nicobar District, have expressed their gratitude to the Director of Shipping Services, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, for facilitating the availability of vessels, which played a crucial role in the successful planning of the excursion.
The study tour to Barren Island is expected to enrich students’ understanding of the region’s unique natural environment and biodiversity, while fostering a deeper appreciation for the ecological importance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
