The Assam Association, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (AAANI), ushered in the Assamese New Year with vibrant Rongali Bihu celebrations held at the MES Community Hall in Brichgunj, Sri Vijaya Puram, on Sunday. The day-long event brought together the Assamese community residing across the islands in a joyous celebration of spring, culture, and tradition.
The festivities began with the hoisting of the AAANI flag by Mr. Biman Chandra Borah, President of the Bihu Celebration Committee, followed by the rendition of the Jatiya Sangeet and a solemn Swahid Tarpan (tribute to martyrs) led by Dr. Seemanta Kumar Deka. In a symbolic gesture of environmental commitment, Major Prabhuraj Deori planted a sapling on the premises.
The cultural programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Major Mintu Rajbonshi. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dipon Sharmah emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and celebrating Bihu even in distant corners of the country like the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Traditional games such as Koni Juj (egg fight) and Tekeli Bhanga (pot breaking) brought cheer and nostalgic delight, especially among the children. A colourful Mukoli Bihu performance showcased the rich rhythms of Assamese dance and music, captivating the audience.
Dressed in traditional mekhela chador and gamosas, community members added vibrancy to the atmosphere, proudly displaying their cultural identity.
The Annual General Body Meeting of AAANI was also convened during the event. A new executive committee was formed, with Dr. Dipon Sharmah elected as President, Mr. Bikash Das as Vice President, Mr. Tapashya Rai as Secretary, Mr. Himanshu Bora as Joint Secretary, and Mr. Asim Das as Treasurer. An advisory panel was also announced, comprising Major Prabhuraj Deori, Major Mintu Rajbonshi, Mr. Naba Kumar Bora, Dr. Seemanta Kumar Deka, and Dr. Parag Deori.
Winners of the games were awarded prizes and gifts, while attendees were treated to a spread of traditional Assamese delicacies. The celebration concluded on a patriotic note with a farewell programme and the singing of the National Anthem. (Story Based on PR)
