In an ongoing effort to combat drug and substance abuse among youth, the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), under the Directorate of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), South Andaman, conducted an awareness campaign at the Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti. Around 126 students, along with the Principal and teaching staff, participated in the event aimed at educating young minds on the dangers of drug abuse.
The event began with a warm welcome by Ms. Shirley, PGT at the host school, followed by an opening address by Principal Mr. J. Dasan Pushparaj, who underscored the importance of such initiatives in creating a safer, drug-free community. He urged students to take active interest in the campaign’s educational sessions, which addressed various aspects of drug prevention.
Dr. M.K. Mahato from IRCA, South Andaman, led an insightful session on the physical and mental health hazards posed by drug use. His talk emphasised techniques for resisting peer pressure and the critical role of supportive relationships with family and friends in fostering resilience against substance abuse. Dr. Mahato highlighted the 24/7 Helpline (No. 112) for drug-related complaints and counselling and shared his personal contact information to offer extended support to students in need.
Adding to the program, the Project Assistant from NAPDDR encouraged students to cultivate effective study habits and maintain focus, aiming to steer them away from negative influences and build a positive mindset. Her guidance provided practical advice for students to avoid distractions and stay committed to their goals.
The campaign marks a continued commitment by NAPDDR, the Directorate of Social Welfare, and IRCA to raising awareness on the dangers of substance abuse and to support young people in making healthy life choices.
