The Directorate of Social Welfare recently organized an impactful awareness program focusing on the detrimental effects of alcohol and drug abuse under the banner of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’. The event, aimed at addressing the rising concerns over substance abuse, was held at the Biswakarma Auto Driver Sangh, Aberdeen Bazaar.

The program commenced with an insightful session led by Ms. Anchamma, Project Assistant at the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), who discussed the devastating consequences of substance abuse on individuals, families, and society at large. Her talk highlighted how addiction severely affects physical, mental, and emotional health, driving home the importance of timely intervention and community support.

Dr. M.K. Mahato, an expert associated with the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), elaborated on the challenges faced by those battling drug addiction. He emphasized the significant toll substance abuse takes on one’s well-being, urging the audience to recognize the life-threatening nature of addiction. Dr. Mahato also encouraged open discussions on the issue, stressing the importance of collective efforts to curb drug abuse and support those affected.

Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director of the Directorate of Social Welfare, reiterated the urgent need to combat drug-related issues, especially among the younger population. He described drug abuse as a serious threat to the fabric of society, which destroys lives, fragments families, and weakens entire communities. “This awareness program is a step towards educating the public and offering essential support to those affected by addiction,” he stated, adding that safeguarding the future of youth requires concerted action from all sections of society.

The awareness initiative called for a unified effort to protect the well-being of the community and to ensure that future generations remain free from the scourge of substance abuse. Participants engaged in discussions on the pressing need for preventive measures, underscoring the importance of raising awareness in creating a healthier, drug-free society.
