In observance of World Thalassemia and Hemophilia Day, Tagore Government College of Education organized a comprehensive awareness programme for its B.Ed. students, focusing on fostering inclusivity and understanding disabilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.
The session, themed ‘Understanding Various Disabilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 – Towards an Inclusive Society’, aimed to educate future educators about the 21 benchmark disabilities recognized under the RPwD Act, including Thalassemia and Hemophilia. The initiative sought to empower the students to create supportive, barrier-free learning environments in their future classrooms.
The programme was jointly facilitated by experts from the Composite Regional Centre (CRC), Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Mr. T.Y. Abid, Lecturer in Physiotherapy, provided detailed insights into the 21 benchmark disabilities and introduced various rehabilitation courses recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India. Meanwhile, Ms. Saranyah R.K, Rehabilitation Officer, emphasized the critical role educators play in promoting an inclusive society and discussed classroom accommodations necessary for differently-abled students.
The session was well-received, reflecting a growing commitment among future teachers to support and accommodate students with diverse needs.
