The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) recently organized awareness programs on Artificial Insemination (AI) in cattle at Joginder Nagar Community Hall under Laxmi Nagar Panchayat and at the Veterinary Hospital, Campbell Bay, for Govind Nagar and Campbell Bay Gram Panchayats.

The initiative aimed to educate dairy farmers and Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members on scientific breeding techniques to enhance milk production, livestock quality, and rural income.

The awareness sessions were attended by Mr. E.S. Rajesh, Pramukh, Campbell Bay; Mr. Sanjay Ekka, Up-Pramukh, Campbell Bay; Mr. Prahlad Singh, Pradhan, GP Laxmi Nagar; Mr. Venkat, Pradhan, GP Govind Nagar; Mr. Emanual, Up-Pradhan, GP Campbell Bay; ward members from all three Panchayats; and dairy farmers from the respective areas.

Experts from the department highlighted the advantages of adopting Artificial Insemination for improving milk yield and genetic quality. They also discussed the use of sex-sorted semen for producing female calves and the need to castrate scrub bulls to ensure effective AI coverage. Additionally, participants were briefed on income-generating opportunities from cattle by-products, such as setting up cow dung-based biogas plants, utilizing cow urine, and making incense sticks (agarbatti) from cow dung.

A key outcome of the programs was a collective resolution acknowledging that the presence of scrub bulls has limited AI adoption in Great Nicobar. The participants agreed to jointly undertake the castration of all stray scrub bulls across the Gram Panchayats in coordination with the AH&VS Department.

This community-driven initiative marks a significant step toward improving systematic breeding and advancing dairy development in the southernmost region of the Islands.
