The Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCAs) and the Police Department, has initiated a comprehensive campaign called Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan to raise awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse. A series of 100 awareness programmes have been scheduled as part of the campaign, commencing from July 10, 2023.
To kickstart the initiative, an awareness programme targeting students and teachers was held at the Government Model Senior Secondary School in Port Blair on 10th July 2023. A total of 110 students and teachers participated in the programme, gaining valuable insights on the subject.
The resource persons leading the programme included Dr. M.K. Mahato from IRCAs, who shed light on the health issues associated with alcohol and drug consumption. Mr Vinit Kumar Maurya, SI from the Police Department, educated the students about the NDPS Act and shared tips on how to recognize and avoid drug peddlers to ensure personal safety. Mr A.K. Biswas, Nodal Officer of the Prohibition Department under the Social Welfare Department, highlighted the prevalent issues and challenges posed by drug abuse among the youth. Additionally, Swamy Hari Padananda from Bharat Sevashram Sangha emphasized the benefits of yoga and spirituality in overcoming addiction.
The resource persons urged the students and teachers to actively participate in the campaign and contribute to making the Andaman & Nicobar Islands a “Drug Free” region. They emphasized the importance of raising awareness and educating students about the adverse effects of alcohol and drug abuse on individuals, families, workplaces, and society as a whole.
Dr. Pushpavalli, Principal In-Charge of the Government Model Senior Secondary School, expressed her delight at organizing such a crucial awareness programme for the students and teachers.
The second programme in the series of 100 awareness programmes is scheduled to take place at the Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Port Blair on July 12, 2023. The initiative aims to reach a wider audience and create a significant impact in the fight against substance abuse.
