In the run-up to the first Bird Festival of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, scheduled to commence on February 14, a series of awareness programmes have been successfully organised across the islands as part of the festival’s pre-event activities.

The programmes were conducted by the Department of Environment and Forests in coordination with the Andaman Avian Club across various Forest Divisions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The initiatives witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, members of the general public, PRI representatives, bird watchers, researchers, as well as staff and workers of the Department of Environment and Forests.

A range of engaging and educational activities were organised to promote awareness about local biodiversity and bird conservation. These included guided ecological walks aimed at helping participants understand island ecosystems, with special emphasis on mangroves and wetlands, which serve as vital habitats for numerous bird species.

Interactive programmes such as Feed the Bird Station, Build a Nest Challenge, Sketch a Bird sessions, and Bird Quiz competitions were also conducted to encourage hands-on learning and active community participation.

The pre-festival activities aimed to promote public involvement and sensitise various stakeholders to the importance of protecting avian diversity and natural habitats, in line with the festival’s theme, “Protect Birds, Preserve Nature, Secure Tomorrow.”
