The 18th All India Conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), held from 31 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, has re-elected B. Chandrachoodan from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as one of its General Council Members.

Chandrachoodan, who serves as the General Secretary of CITU Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has represented the union on the national General Council for several years, and his re-election was confirmed during the conclave attended by delegates from across India.

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) is one of India’s major national trade union federations, founded in 1970 and affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). It is recognised for organising workers from diverse sectors—including agriculture, manufacturing, transport and services—to advocate for labour rights, fair wages, improved working conditions, and broader social security protections.

Every three years, CITU convenes an All India Conference to review its policies, discuss labour issues, and elect leadership and council members who will steer the organisation until the next session. The General Council, to which Chandrachoodan has been re-elected, is a key decision-making body that guides CITU’s direction between conferences.

CITU maintains a significant presence in India’s labour movement, with millions of members nationwide and active engagement in industrial disputes, policy advocacy, and workers’ rights struggles. Its activities range from negotiations with employers and government bodies to organising workers across both the formal and informal sectors.
