Baratang Police Swiftly Arrests Accused in Attempt to Murder Case Within Hours of Crime

In a swift response, Baratang Police arrested a 23-year-old man accused of attempting to murder a 17-year-old girl within hours of the crime on October 20, 2024. The incident took place near Azad Hind Fauj Setu, Gandhighat Jetty Road, when the accused, enraged by the victim’s decision to end their friendship, attacked her with a broken glass bottle.

According to the police, a MLC call was received at Kadamtala Police Station, informing them that a minor girl had been seriously assaulted and admitted to PHC Kadamtala. A police team from Kadamtala immediately rushed to the hospital and recorded the victim’s statement. She revealed that the accused was a friend, a private driver from Flat Bay, Vijaygarh, Baratang, for two years. However, after discovering his alcohol addiction, she decided to end the friendship, which led to frequent arguments.

On the morning of the attack, the victim and a female friend took an auto to the meeting spot where the accused was waiting. When she told him she no longer wished to continue their friendship due to his addiction, the accused became violent. In a fit of rage, he attacked the victim with a broken glass bottle, slashing her neck multiple times and inflicting several other injuries as she tried to defend herself. The victim’s friend quickly sought help, stopping a passing vehicle, which transported the injured girl to PHC Kadamtala for urgent medical attention.

Based on the victim’s statement, a Zero FIR was registered at Kadamtala Police Station under Section 109(1) of the BNS 2023 and transferred to Baratang Police Station for further investigation, as the crime occurred within its jurisdiction. Subsequently, a regular FIR (No. 37/24) was registered, and the case was assigned to ASI R. Elangovan of Baratang Police Station.

A police team, led by SI Surjit Bhattacharjee and closely supervised by SDPO Rangat, Rahul L. Nair, IPS, launched an intensive search to track down the accused. Within hours, the team successfully apprehended him and recovered the broken glass bottle used in the crime.

The accused has been arrested and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Mayabunder, where he has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Investigations also revealed that the accused had been involved in a kidnapping case registered at Diglipur Police Station in 2020 (FIR No. 28/20) and was out on bail at the time of the current offence.
