In a bid to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and uphold the spirit of cleanliness espoused by the Father of the Nation, a coastal cleaning drive was conducted at the Marina Park area of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on September 29, 2023. This initiative was part of the nationwide ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ or Cleanliness Campaign.
Cadets hailing from the Army and Naval NCC units wholeheartedly participated in an awareness rally to address the pressing issue of marine pollution and preserve the pristine beauty of the coastal regions. Their mission was to clear the sea shores and beaches of plastic and non-degradable waste materials that have been posing a significant threat to the local environment.
Under the able supervision of Lt. Col Pankaj Modgil, Commanding Officer of the 1 (A&N) Indep Inf Coy NCC, the program unfolded with a sense of purpose and responsibility. The cadets engaged actively with the local population, imparting knowledge about the detrimental impact of plastic waste on marine life and the delicate ecosystems of the islands.
Approximately 200 cadets, along with ANO/CT’s and PI staff, representing both the Army and Naval units, took part in the event with unparalleled zeal and enthusiasm. Together, they gathered approximately 20 kilograms of plastic and waste materials, marking a significant stride toward cleaner coastal regions.
The ‘Swachhata Abhiyan/Swachhata Diwas’ initiative at Marina Park stands as a testament to the commitment of the youth in safeguarding the natural treasures of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Their dedication and tireless efforts underscore the importance of collective action in preserving our environment for future generations.
