Mr. G Bhasker, Chairman, Campaign Committee, Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee has written a letter to the Election Commissioner of Election Commission (Union Territories) demanding early election to the Municipal Council, Zilla Parishads and Panchayats in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Mr. G Bhasker in his letter has mentioned that the term of the elected representatives of the local bodies in Andaman and Nicobar Islands have expired in September 2020. He added that the Election Commission had made arrangements for the conduct of Elections in April 2021 but that couldn’t happen anticipating the spread of COVID-19. He informed the Election Commissioner that at present the administration of all Gram Panchayats and Municipal Council is held by the Govt. Servants and their actions are unduly delaying all the development works of the Islands.
He added that people living in remote Islands are suffering because of the non-availability of Public Representatives to raise their grievances.
He also added that on 4th March lottery was conducted at Port Blair and subsequently at Mayabunder and its validity will expire next month.
He further informed the Election Commissioner that COVID-19 cases have drastically reduced in the Islands and businesses and schools have reopened. He also informed about various measures being taken in the Islands to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
He requested the Election Commissioner to conduct the elections to the Local Bodies of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on top priority taking into account the sufferings of the people and future development of the Islands.
