Mr. TSG Bhasker, Chairman of the Campaign Committee of the Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC), has raised fresh concerns over worsening traffic congestion along the key road stretch from Dairy Farm Junction to Garacharma.
In a letter to the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bhasker called for urgent administrative intervention, including the construction of a flyover from the Airport Departure Gate to Garacharma, to alleviate the daily hardships faced by commuters and improve traffic flow.
He emphasized that this route is a critical arterial road used by thousands of residents and tourists every day. “The stretch has become a major bottleneck, especially during peak hours, leading to long traffic jams, delays in hospital transfers, and airport commutes,” Mr. Bhasker said. He added that a flyover would significantly reduce congestion and ensure smoother transit for both locals and visitors.
Apart from the flyover, Mr. Bhasker stressed the need for immediate road widening, particularly along the airport boundary. He noted that despite repeated appeals, no substantial action has been taken so far, leaving the public to bear the brunt of official inaction.
Highlighting the long-standing neglect of infrastructural upgrades, he pointed out that the last major road widening in Sri Vijaya Puram was completed nearly three decades ago, during the tenure of former Lt. Governor Mr. Vakkom Purushothaman (1993–1996). Since then, no significant improvements have been carried out on this vital route.
Mr. Bhasker also warned that the road has deteriorated considerably during the monsoon, with potholes rendering it unsafe and difficult to navigate. This situation poses risks for emergency vehicles, school transport, and travellers heading to the airport.
He urged the Lt. Governor to take personal interest in the matter and expedite the proposed flyover project, along with immediate repair and widening of the road. “Such steps will greatly improve urban mobility and enhance the quality of life for Sri Vijaya Puram residents,” he added.
