The peaceful ‘Andaman Bandh’ called today by Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, at the behest of his supporters over various pending issues, was met with widespread support across the region.
The Bandh, which saw voluntary participation from residents and businesses alike, garnered backing from numerous organizations, including the Andaman Chamber of Commerce, Grain Dealers Association, Bus Operators Association, Auto Associations, Gold Jewellers Association, Quarry Operators Association, and various tourism-related and private boat associations.
In Sri Vijaya Puram, the Bandh was particularly effective, with shops, business establishments, auto rickshaws, buses, and petrol pumps remaining closed. The closures were voluntary, with no external pressure reported. Observations from other parts of the island indicate that many businesses and transport services suspended operations from 6 AM to 2 PM, with no untoward incidents occurring during the day.
As part of the day’s activities, a delegation of ten individuals, led by Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, met with the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor. They presented a memorandum addressing the concerns raised by the MP. The meeting facilitated a detailed discussion of each point in the presence of high-level officials from the A & N Administration. The Lieutenant Governor expressed a commitment to address nearly all the demands raised by the MP promptly.
Following the successful Bandh and the constructive dialogue with the Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray extended his gratitude to his supporters and the organizations that participated, including the Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Grain Dealers Association, the fishing community, Builders Associations, Auto Unions, Truck Unions, Private Bus Union, Vegetable Market Unions, and Water Sports Operators, among others.
