The leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for renaming Port Blair as ‘Sri Vijaya Puram.’ The move, they said, marks a significant step in shedding colonial ties and highlighting the island’s historical importance in India’s freedom struggle.
BJP State Prabhari Mr. Raghunath Kulkarni and State President Mr. Ajoy Bairagi, along with party members and supporters, lauded the decision as a symbolic victory that reflects the contributions of the islands in India’s path to independence.
The leadership emphasized that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have long been an integral part of India’s strategic and historical narrative. The region, which once served as a key naval base for the Chola Empire, is now set to play an even greater role in the nation’s strategic and developmental ambitions.
This renaming initiative comes at a time when the government has been focusing on developing key infrastructure projects, including the newly inaugurated international airport terminal at Port Blair and the upcoming transshipment port in Great Nicobar, further establishing the islands as a critical base for India’s aspirations in trade, defence, and tourism.
