In a bid to enhance milk production and promote sustainable livestock development in the Islands, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services is actively implementing the Cattle and Buffalo Breeding & Improvement Programme.

As part of the initiative, Artificial Insemination (AI) is being carried out across the Islands using frozen semen and Sex Sorted Semen to improve the genetic quality of cattle. In the case of buffaloes, the Department is promoting the use of genetically proven Murrah semen—renowned for its superior milk yield potential.

Murrah buffaloes are known for their adaptability to the Islands’ climatic conditions, high disease resistance, and overall cost-effectiveness in rearing. To make this technology accessible, Murrah semen straws have been made available at all Artificial Insemination centres throughout the Union Territory.

By opting for AI using Murrah semen, farmers can ensure the birth of calves with significantly improved milk production potential. The Department has urged all buffalo owners to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance the productivity and profitability of their herds.
