Campbell Bay, 17 June 2022
ANIIDCO IMFL Shop, Campbell Bay has sold liquor worth more than INR 1 Crore in 77 days between 30 March 2022 and 15 June 2022. Great Nicobar has a population of around 5500 in the legal drinking age.
2329 boxes of liquor were received by the ANIIDCO IMFL Shop on 30th March 2022. By 15th June 2022, almost 2300 boxes of liquor were sold. 2300 boxes contain more than 20,496 litres of liquor.
The data on liquor received and liquor sold was collected by verbal enquiries from the staff of ANIIDCO IMFL Shop, Campbell Bay.
The per capita consumption of liquor in India was around 4 litres in 2021, according to statista.com. The local data suggests per person consumption of 3.72 Litres of liquor in Great Nicobar in just 77 days.
The population in the legal drinking age was calculated by referring to the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination data from PHC Campbell Bay. The population estimation is fairly accurate as 100% of the 18+ population has been vaccinated with at-least the first dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine, according to the announcement made by Andaman and Nicobar Administration.
The total cost of liquor was estimated by assuming the cost of one litre of liquor as INR 500. INR 500/litre is closer to the lower price band of the liquor sold at ANIIDCO IMFL Shop, Campbell Bay. In reality, the total liquor sold would be worth much more than INR 1 Crore.
Is it possible for a population of 5500 people in the legal drinking age to gulp down 20,496 litres of liquor in just 77 days?
Calculations:
How the cost of liquor sold between 30 March 2022 and 15 June 2022 was calculated?
On verbal enquiry from ANIIDCO IMFL Shop, Campbell Bay we were informed that the last consignment of liquor which arrived at Great Nicobar was on 30th March 2022.
The details of the consignment received was as follows:
IMFL 750 ML Boxes = 1789
IMFL 375 ML Boxes = 30
IMFL 180 ML Boxes = 510
A total of 2329 Boxes of Liquor were received
Almost 2300 Boxes of Liquor were sold by 15 June 2022
All liquor left in stock was in form of 750 ML Bottles by 15 June 2022.
Each box of IMFL 750 ML contains 12 bottles, IMFL 375 ML box contains 24 bottles and IMFL 180 ML box contains 48 bottles.
Total quantity of liquor sold(in Litres) by 15th June 2022 = {[1760 (12 Bottles X 750 ML)]/1000} + {[30 (24 Bottles X 375 ML)]/1000} + {[510 (48 Bottles X 180 ML)]/1000} = 20,496 Litres (Approx)
The cost of liquor towards the lower price band of the brands sold at the IMFL Shop is around Rs. 500/Litre.
Cost of 20,496 Litres of Liquor sold by 15 June 2022 = 20,496 X 500 = INR 1,02,48000/-
The Cost of liquor was calculated assuming the cost of per litre liquor in the Lowe price band of the brands sold at IMFL Shop, which for calculation was assumed as Rs. 500/-.
The actual sale of ANIIDCO IMFL Outlet would be much higher than the estimated value of INR 1,02,48000/- in 77 days.
How the population size in the legal drinking age was estimated?
The legal drinking age in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is 18 Years. Section 24 of the ‘Andaman and Nicobar Islands Excise Regulation, 2012’ states that ‘No person or licensed vendor or his employee or agent shall sell or deliver any liquor to any person under the age of eighteen years whether for consumption by self or others. ‘.
The best estimate of the latest population data can be drawn from the First Dose COVID-19 Vaccination data as 100% of the 18+ population in the Islands have been vaccinated with at-least the first dose of the vaccine.
We requested the vaccination data from PHC Campbell Bay and the found that:
In 45+ Age group 1957 people have received the first dose of COVID-19 Vaccination.
In 18-44 Age group 3235 people have received the first dose of COVID-19 Vaccination.
149 Health Care Workers have received the first dose of COVID-19 Vaccination.
159 Front Line Workers have received the first dose of COVID-19 Vaccination.
So the total 18+ Population in Great Nicobar is a sum of the people in the 45+ age group, 18-45 age group, Front Line Workers and Health Care Workers, which is 5500.
