The Car Nicobar–Nancowry segment of the Chennai–Andaman and Nicobar Islands Submarine Optical Fibre Cable (CANI) has been offline since 20 September 2025, following a snag in the submarine cable.

Since then, residents of Nancowry and Great Nicobar Islands have faced severe communication challenges. Both islands are relying on satellite bandwidth, resulting in limited internet connectivity. Only a few DSL broadband connections provided by BSNL in Great Nicobar remain operational, offering slow internet speeds.

Voice communication has also been affected, with frequent call drops, poor audio quality, and difficulty in establishing connections.

Multiple sources have indicated to Nicobar Times that repair work on the Car Nicobar–Nancowry segment is expected by the end of October 2025, though the exact timeline and completion date remain uncertain. No official confirmation on repair schedules has been released yet.

Until the submarine cable segment is restored, residents will continue to face connectivity challenges.
