In a significant step towards strengthening investigative standards and legal awareness among law enforcement personnel, the Andaman & Nicobar Police, in collaboration with the A&N State Legal Services Authority and the District Legal Services Authority, organised an interactive capacity-building programme on investigation procedures and legal practices on Thursday.

The session was held at the Conference Hall of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Police Training Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram, and witnessed enthusiastic participation from police officers across the Islands. While 30 officers attended the programme in person, participants from 45 locations joined virtually, reflecting a wide outreach and engagement.

The programme was led by distinguished judicial officers, including Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Samrat Roy, and Judicial Magistrate First Class-II & Principal Magistrate, Juvenile Justice Board, Jayanta Mukherjee. Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District, Shweta K. Sugathan, IPS, was also present during the session.

The training focused on enhancing officers’ understanding of key legislations, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act, among others. Emphasis was laid on the complexities involved in handling sensitive cases and the importance of adhering to due legal procedures during investigations.

During the interactive session, the judicial officers shared insights into common challenges encountered during investigations and court proceedings. They provided guidance on legal provisions, proper documentation, and best practices to ensure effective case handling. Participants were also given the opportunity to raise queries and seek clarifications on practical aspects of investigations.

The initiative underscores the continued commitment of the Andaman & Nicobar Police to improve the quality of investigations and foster stronger coordination with the judiciary. Such programmes are expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the criminal justice system in the Islands.
