Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), situated in Port Blair, has joined hands with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, along with robust support from the National Health Mission (NHM), the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), and the Directorate of Health Services, A & N Islands. Together, they embark on a significant initiative: the Cataract and Eye Care Camp, commencing on January 2nd, 2024.
This concerted effort aims to address the prevalent issue of cataracts among the islanders. Scheduled to run throughout January and February 2024, the camp anticipates performing surgical corrections for cataracts in over 500 patients hailing from all three districts of A & N Islands. The overarching goal is nothing short of ambitious — to declare A & N Islands as the first Cataract Free Union Territory in India.
The success of this program heavily relies on the technical expertise extended by three teams of ophthalmologists from Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital (VMMC & SJH), New Delhi. Cataracts stand as a leading cause of avoidable blindness, and this collaborative endeavour seeks to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals grappling with this condition.
The initiative signifies a concerted effort by multiple stakeholders, showcasing a convergence of expertise and resources to tackle a health issue that significantly impacts the island community. The surgical interventions and concerted efforts of medical professionals underscore a collective commitment to alleviating visual impairments and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
