Joining the nationwide movement to raise awareness for Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs), the Art & Culture Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration illuminated the iconic National Memorial Cellular Jail in red on 29th October 2024, symbolizing support for dyslexia awareness. The initiative, led by the direction of Chief Secretary Keshav Chandra, IAS, reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and understanding for those impacted by learning disabilities.

The campaign, known as #Act4Dyslexia, highlights the pressing need for awareness and resources to support individuals with learning disabilities, a group that includes an estimated 20% of India’s population and approximately 35 million students. Launched in collaboration with the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) and ChangeInkk Foundation, the initiative aligns with Global Dyslexia Awareness Month.

Earlier this week, prominent landmarks across India—including Rashtrapati Bhawan, North and South Block, Parliament House, and India Gate—were similarly illuminated in red as part of the national campaign. The #Act4Dyslexia movement is a collaborative effort to deepen understanding, reduce stigma, and ensure opportunities for individuals with SLDs to thrive in society.
