In a significant step towards empowering Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Rural Livelihood Mission (ANIRLM), the Chief Secretary of A&N Administration, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, inaugurated the ‘Avsar SHG Sales Counter’ at the Departure Conclave of Veer Savarkar International (VSI) Airport on January 29, 2025.
The event was attended by Mr. Arjun Sharma, Secretary (Rural Development), Mr. Devender Yadav, Director of VSI Airport, Airports Authority of India (AAI), and Ms. Sapna Priya, Director (Rural Development). This initiative marks the second such sales counter established under the collaboration between the A&N Administration and AAI, aimed at providing SHG members with direct access to a larger consumer base.
The newly inaugurated counter offers a marketing platform for SHGs, allowing tourists to purchase a variety of unique, locally crafted products. Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Kumar lauded the initiative, emphasizing its role in promoting local artisans and preserving the cultural heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
“This Sales Counter at the Departure Conclave will not only boost the visibility of our local artisans but also provide tourists with a chance to take home a piece of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ rich cultural heritage,” he stated.
Mr. Arjun Sharma highlighted the Administration’s commitment to strengthening SHGs by ensuring sustainable economic opportunities. He stressed that such platforms are essential for financial empowerment while preserving the unique traditions of the region.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Devender Yadav underscored the importance of the initiative in connecting SHGs directly with visitors. “We are pleased to facilitate such a venture that supports the local economy and showcases the creativity and craftsmanship of our community members,” he remarked.
SHG members expressed their gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the sales counter would significantly expand their customer reach and contribute to their financial independence. The ‘Avsar SHG Sales Counter’ is expected to bolster the local economy while fostering appreciation for the cultural richness of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
