In a landmark initiative, Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration, Mr. Keshav Chandra, IAS, virtually launched the ‘Kuposhan Mukt District Abhiyan’ of Nicobar District on 06 August 2024. This ambitious program aims to eliminate acute malnutrition in the region within the next three months, demonstrating a significant commitment to improving child nutrition and health.

During the launch event, the Chief Secretary emphasised the collaborative nature of the Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar initiative, presenting it as a model for other regions. “This program represents a collective commitment to our children’s future,” he stated. “By working together, leveraging community resources, and focusing on coordinated health and nutrition strategies, we can make a tangible difference in eradicating malnutrition.”

Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District, underscored the importance of providing immediate nutritional support to malnourished children, highlighting it as a critical step in the fight against malnutrition in the district.

The launch ceremony witnessed the presence of the Tribal Council leaders, local officials, community leaders, PRI members, and representatives from various sectors. Their attendance highlighted the unified effort and commitment of the Government to enhance the nutritional outcomes and health standards for children in Nicobar District.

Key Highlights of the Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar Initiative:

– Zero Cases Target: The primary goal of the initiative is to eradicate acute malnutrition among children in the region within the next three months. This ambitious target reflects a robust strategy and unwavering dedication to child health improvement.

– Synergy between Anganwadis and Health Centres: The initiative emphasises collaboration between Anganwadi Centres and local Health Centres. By integrating resources and efforts, these entities will provide comprehensive nutritional support and health services, ensuring no child is left behind.

– Voluntary Contribution of Poshan Kits: Local Market Associations have shown remarkable community spirit by contributing Poshan Kits as Poshan Mitra. These kits, specially designed to meet children’s nutritional needs, were distributed during the event to malnourished children. This community effort is crucial for achieving the initiative’s targets and improving children’s overall health in the region.

Alongside the launch program, a medical screening camp was organised, and Poshan kits, fruits, and vegetable-bearing plants were distributed to malnourished children. Poshan Mitras were recognized with Appreciation Certificates, and a video highlighting malnutrition symptoms and remedial measures was screened during the event.

The launch of the Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar District sets a new benchmark for addressing child nutrition and health challenges. It exemplifies a concerted effort between Government agencies, health professionals, and the community to create a healthier and more nourished future for the children of Nicobar District. Similar programs were also organized in Kamorta and Campbell Bay.
