In a vibrant display of cultural pride, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, inaugurated the ‘Islands Heritage Walk’ on Sunday (22nd December 2024). The event, aimed at history and culture enthusiasts, offered participants an immersive journey through some of the most historically significant landmarks in the Sri Vijaya Puram area.
The walk, which attracted a diverse group of citizens, senior officers, and heritage aficionados, commenced at the iconic Vintage Andaman Club. From there, the group followed a route steeped in history, exploring key sites such as the Clock Tower, Cellular Jail, Aberdeen War Memorial, Tsunami Memorial, and the Japanese Bunkers along Foreshore Road. The journey culminated at the historic Chatham Saw Mill, a symbol of the region’s architectural and industrial heritage.
Leading the walk, Dr. Kumar highlighted the importance of preserving the islands’ cultural legacy. “The Islands Heritage Walk is not just a journey through our past but a commitment to safeguarding our cultural identity for generations to come,” he said, emphasising the collective responsibility in maintaining and promoting the unique heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The event, which successfully bridged the past with the present, garnered enthusiastic participation and heartfelt appreciation from all those in attendance. It stands as a testament to the Administration’s commitment to fostering a deeper awareness and pride in the region’s historical and cultural wealth.
