In an effort to raise awareness about the history and heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration hosted a special heritage walk on Sunday, January 12, 2025. The walk, led by Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, the Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, was part of a series aimed at educating the public about the region’s rich cultural past.
The “Corbyn’s Cove Heritage Walk” began at Girls School Junction and journeyed through several significant historical sites, including Flag Point, the Shrine of Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, Goodwill Estate, Hornbill Resort, and the ANIIMS Campus, before concluding at the iconic Corbyn’s Cove beach. The walk provided participants with a unique opportunity to explore the historical landmarks that define the city’s past.
Accompanying the group was Dr. Pronob Kumar Sircar, a well-known historian, who shared fascinating historical insights about the sites visited. One highlight of the walk was Dr. Sircar’s revelation about Corbyn’s Cove. Originally named South Corbyn’s Cove, the beach was named after Henry Fisher Corbyn, the first head of the Andamanese Home in the 1860s. Dr. Sircar explained that North Corbyn’s Cove, which was located near the current North Bay, has since disappeared from popular memory.
The walk was attended by senior officers, local civilians, and history enthusiasts eager to learn about the legacy of the Andaman Islands. Dr. Kumar, who concluded the event, emphasized the importance of preserving the region’s history for future generations. He stated, “This walk provides a unique opportunity to discover the rich history and heritage of the islands, and we intend to continue organizing such heritage walks in the future for the educational benefit of the public.”
The event has garnered widespread interest, and the administration is expected to organize more such walks in the coming months, further fostering a sense of appreciation for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ diverse historical and cultural heritage.
