CINCAN Receives Maha Vir Chakra Medals of Capt. Chander Narain Singh as Colonel of The Garhwal Rifles on 60th Martyrdom Anniversary

In a solemn tribute to one of India’s valiant sons, a military ceremony was held in Dharamshala today to mark the 60th martyrdom anniversary of Captain Chander Narain Singh, Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), who laid down his life during the 1965 Indo-Pak War.

Captain Singh, a courageous officer of the 2nd Battalion, The Garhwal Rifles, made the supreme sacrifice while combating Pakistani infiltrators on August 5, 1965. For his extraordinary bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, the nation’s second-highest wartime gallantry award.

As part of the commemorative ceremony, Mr. Sukhdev Singh, brother of the late Captain, presented his Maha Vir Chakra and other service medals to The Garhwal Rifles Regiment. The medals were formally received by Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, Ph.D., Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), who is also the Colonel of The Garhwal Rifles and Garhwal Scouts.

The event was graced by several senior Army officials, including Lieutenant General Rajan Sharawat, AVSM, VSM, General Officer Commanding 9 Corps; Brigadier Vinod Singh Negi, VSM, Commandant, The Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre; and Colonel Vishal Kumar Singh, Commanding Officer, 2 Garhwal Rifles. Esteemed veterans, serving officers, and soldiers of the Regiment were also in attendance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lt Gen DS Rana paid heartfelt homage to Capt CN Singh, stating, “He was a true embodiment of courage, leadership and bravery. His story will forever inspire generations of Indian youth and soldiers.”

The medals will be preserved and displayed at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre Museum in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, serving as a source of inspiration and a proud symbol of the Regiment’s storied legacy.

Military officials lauded the gesture by the martyr’s family, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honouring those who have laid down their lives in the service of the Nation.
