As part of the 80th Anniversary of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) Foundation Day, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a seminar on “Unite & Fight Against Anti-Working Class Policies” at Sri Vijaya Puram in South Andaman on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary of CITU A & N State Committee, highlighted concerns over the policies of the central government and their impact on workers. He urged trade unions in the islands to come together to address issues affecting the working class.
D. Ayyappan, Vice President of CITU State Committee, spoke about the origins of WFTU in 1945 and the post-World War II struggles of workers worldwide. He discussed changes in India’s labour laws under successive governments since 1991, including the passage of four Labour Codes in 2019-2020, and noted that central trade unions have organised multiple general strikes in response, the most recent being on 9 July 2025.
Other CITU leaders, including P. Sathyapal and SP Kalairajan, emphasised the need for continued and coordinated action to address workers’ demands. The programme was presided over by R. Surendran Pillai, President of CITU State Committee, with Anand Rajan, Secretary, also present.
The seminar was attended by several hundred workers from both municipal and rural areas of South Andaman. (Story Based on PR)
