The Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, has announced the commencement of the annual closed season for sport fishing activities in the territorial waters of the Islands, in accordance with the provisions of the A&N Islands Marine Fishing (Amendment) Rules, 2019.
As per the notification, the closed season will be in effect from June 1 to August 31, 2025, inclusive of both the commencement and expiry dates. During this three-month period, the operation of fishing vessels for sport fishing purposes shall be strictly prohibited in all designated waters of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Department has clarified that no permits for sport fishing will be issued throughout the closed season. The regulation is part of ongoing efforts to conserve marine biodiversity and ensure the sustainable management of fishery resources in the region. Closed seasons are typically observed to protect fish stocks during critical breeding and spawning periods, thereby supporting long-term ecological balance and livelihoods dependent on marine resources.
All registered sport fishing vessel owners and operators have been advised to strictly adhere to the closed season guidelines. The Department has further cautioned that any violation of these provisions will result in strict action under the A&N Islands Marine Fishing Rules.
For further information or clarification, vessel owners and operators may contact the Directorate of Fisheries or the respective Zonal Fisheries Offices.
