Community-Focused Events at Sri Vijaya Puram Meteorological Centre Mark 150th Foundation Day of IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) marked a momentous milestone as it celebrated its 150th Foundation Day on 14th January 2025, with grand events held at its Headquarters in New Delhi and Regional Centres across the country. The inaugural ceremony in the national capital, attended by prominent dignitaries, was a significant reflection of the IMD’s long-standing commitment to advancing meteorological science and serving the nation.

The event at IMD Headquarters in New Delhi was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, who served as the chief guest. Also attending were Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of Earth Sciences, and Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, underscoring the global recognition of the IMD’s contributions to weather forecasting and climate research.

At the Meteorological Centre in Sri Vijaya Puram, the celebrations extended to a series of community-focused activities, aimed at engaging the public and promoting environmental awareness. Under the leadership of Mr. Surendra Pratap Singh, the centre organised a range of events, including a Beach Cleaning Drive at Wandoor, a Yoga Session, a Plantation Drive, a Blood Donation Camp, and a Painting Competition. These initiatives were designed to encourage community participation and foster a greater understanding of meteorology and environmental conservation.

On the same day, the Sri Vijaya Puram Centre live telecasted the Headquarters event, allowing local communities to witness the historic ceremony. The event at the centre also featured Ms. Mangayakarasi, Ward Councillor, who distributed certificates to children and staff members in recognition of their active involvement in the various activities. Retired employees of the centre were also felicitated, honouring their years of dedicated service.

Additionally, a technical session was conducted by Dr. K. Sonamuthu, Associate Professor & Head of the Physics Department at JNRM, where he discussed recent advancements in meteorological research and technology. The session provided valuable insights into the ongoing innovations in weather science.

The next day, on 15th January 2025, the IMD Sri Vijaya Puram Centre organized an open house, attracting a large number of students from different schools. Participants had the unique opportunity to explore meteorological instruments and learn about the significance of weather forecasting in daily life.

These events throughout the nation reflect the IMD’s dedication to not only scientific research but also to its role as a socially responsible organization. The celebration at Meteorological Centre Sri Vijaya Puram symbolized the centre’s commitment to fostering community engagement and environmental stewardship. As IMD enters its 150th year, these commemorations serve as a tribute to its rich legacy and a renewed commitment to serving the nation with excellence in meteorological services.
