Serious concerns have been raised over the condition and management of the Andaman Guest House at Anna Nagar, Chennai, which is maintained by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor and the Chief Secretary, Mr. Rakeshwar Lall, State President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti, highlighted what he described as “deplorable conditions and gross mismanagement” at the facility.
According to the complaint, the guest house, which is meant to provide dignified accommodation to government officials and visitors, is allegedly in a state of neglect. Rooms are said to be poorly maintained, forcing guests to clean their own accommodations due to the absence of housekeeping staff. The premises reportedly lack cleanliness, with surrounding areas also in disrepair.
Accessibility issues were also flagged, as the facility does not have a wheelchair ramp for differently-abled or elderly visitors. It was further alleged that the ground floor toilet remains locked most of the time, inconveniencing guests.
The letter pointed out that guests are compelled to prepare their own food and tea in the absence of kitchen staff or catering services. Mr. Lall also raised concerns over staff accountability, claiming that some employees have been posted at the guest house for more than 15 years without transfer, leading to complacency and neglect.
In his representation, Mr. Lall urged the Administration to conduct a detailed inspection of the guest house, take disciplinary action where necessary, and implement staff transfers in line with policy. He also suggested that the management of the facility be shifted from the APWD to the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism for better upkeep and hospitality standards.
The matter has also been copied to the Director, Information, Publicity & Tourism, for necessary action.
