Cops in Campbell Bay Attend PCR Call Under Influence of Alcohol; Causes Annoyance to Public

Campbell Bay, 28 December 2020

On 26th of December 2020 during the late-night hours, five cops from PS Campbell Bay attended a PCR call from Kamal Basti under the influence of alcohol. The whole incident was reported to Nicobar Times by several witnesses who were present there at Kamal Basti during that time.

It is being reported by the witnesses that a PCR call was made late at night on 26th of December 2020 by a resident of Kamal Basti following some arguments and minor scuffle between family members. Five cops reached the site in the official vehicle of Police Department (Mahindra Bolero) bearing registration number AN01D0002. All five cops according to the eyewitnesses, were in a highly inebriated state.

The eyewitnesses further informed that the cops were speaking to the family and were trying to diffuse the situation, when suddenly one of them started hitting the person against whom the complaint was made by the family member.

The residents of Kamal Basti who were present at the site objected to such drunk and violent behaviour by the police personnel.

When the residents objected to the behaviour of the police personnel present there, they reportedly misbehaved with several people. One of the residents who reportedly pulled out his mobile phone to capture the incident was threatened and intimidated by the cops.

The cops started arguing with everyone present there when the residents objected to them being drunk on duty. The cops were reportedly violating all COVID-19 protocols and some of them were not even wearing masks when they reached the site.

One video of the incident which was accessed by Nicobar Times from the residents of the colony, showed some of the cops creating a scene at the site upon being confronted by a resident for not wearing a mask.

The residents of Kamal Basti have approached Nicobar Times to raise this incident since they say this is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in Campbell Bay.

The situation at Kamal Basti calmed after some residents of the colony called a public-friendly senior police officer, who reached the site in no time and sent the drunken cops away.

In another video of the incident, the residents of Kamal Basti are seen demanding that these cops be fined for drinking and driving. One member of the public is heard saying that the rules are same for everyone so these cops should be fined for drinking and driving.

It is a known fact that if members of the general public are caught drinking and driving they are heavily fined with their vehicles sized and all appropriate action is taken against them as per the law. When cops drink and drive the official vehicle of the Police Department, will the same action be taken against them?

Andaman and Nicobar Police has always been a professional force and maintains the highest standards of professionalism in their duties. The Nicobar Police has always been committed for the welfare of the residents of the region, Nicobar Police in this endeavour has organised several sports tournaments. Recently, Nicobar Police has also started publishing a Half Yearly Magazine titled ‘Nicobar Police Diaries’, the first edition of the magazine was launched by the outgoing DGP of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Nicobar Police has always tried maintaining a friendly relationship with the residents of the district but the efforts of the entire police force are squandered when one such incident occurs because of a few police personnel.

It is even painful for the media to raise such incidents which has potential to demotivate an entire force working for the welfare of the society. The police personnel in Nicobar District work hard, they are known for their resilience and sheer dedication towards their duties. These police personnel keep their nation first and serve in the remotest LOP’s like LOP Afrabay, LOP Macachua etc. where there is no telecommunication connectivity, they serve there for months without any communication with their families.

Strictest action should be taken against the police personnel involved in attending the PCR call in Kamal Basti under the influence of alcohol. The action taken should also be conveyed to the public through the respective social media channels of the Andaman and Nicobar Police and Nicobar District Police to reinstate the confidence of the general public on the police force and to differentiate the bad apples from the good ones.
