Campbell Bay, 18 November 2024

Dr. Sujan Chakraborty, former Member of Parliament and Central Committee Member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who was on a tour to North and Middle Andaman, on November 16, 2024, met the families of victims who lost their lives in the recent STS bus accident. Accompanied by senior leaders of CPI (M) and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Dr. Chakraborty extended condolences to the grieving families.

During the visit, Dr. Chakraborty, along with CPI (M) State Secretary D. Ayyappan, CITU State General Secretary B. Chandrachoodan, and CITU Mayabunder Zonal Committee President K. Muralidharan Pillai, met the family of late P. Gurumurthy in Rest Camp. Gurumurthy, a vegetable vendor, was returning home after procuring vegetables for his shop from Billiground when the tragic accident claimed his life.

In the afternoon, the delegation, including CPI (M) leaders Nikunjo Biswas, P.K. Khalid, Rahul Dev Mridha, and S.R. Mridha, visited the family of late Joel Tigga, a Home Guard with the Police Department, at his residence in Betapur. Tigga was en route to Mayabunder for duty when the accident occurred in the Rest Camp area on November 15, 2024.

The CPI (M) leaders assured both families that they would advocate with the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to secure adequate compensation and employment opportunities for the dependents of the victims.

Expressing deep concern, CPI (M) attributed the accident to negligence on the part of the administration, leading to the loss of valuable lives.
