Under the chairmanship of Mr. Arjun Sharma (IAS), the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, a crucial meeting for the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) was held on 5th July 2024, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the fisheries sector.
The session primarily focused on the concurrence of the proposal for the acquisition of deep-sea fishing vessels under PMMSY and the selection of 38 beneficiaries for various subsidy programs. These programs include the construction of new ponds for brackish water aquaculture, the purchase of insulated two-wheelers and three-wheelers with ice boxes, the establishment of re-circulatory aquaculture systems, and the development of cold storage and ice plants. In a noteworthy decision, the committee extended the deadline for the submission of subsidy claims for 24 beneficiaries.
Deputy Commissioner Sharma highlighted the importance of establishing a technical and project evaluation and assessment committee to inspect the assets created under various PMMSY components.
Furthermore, the extension of 25 Sagar Mitras was approved to enhance the functioning and outreach of PMMSY. The induction of Sagar Mitras is expected to bring substantial expertise, guidance, and support to ensure the successful implementation of PMMSY’s objectives.
This proactive meeting underscores the Government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the fisheries sector and uplifting the lives of fishermen.
