The Department of Art & Culture, A&N Administration, in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Akademi, Ministry of Culture, Gol, is set to bring a vibrant cultural experience to the residents of Port Blair. The renowned play ‘Agra Bazar,’ directed by the esteemed Habib Tanvir, is scheduled to grace the stage at the PBMC Auditorium on February 10, 2024, starting at 5 pm.
Habib Tanvir, a luminary in the world of theatre, was not only a playwright and poet but also the founder and director of ‘Naya Theatre,’ Bhopal. His artistic legacy continues to resonate, and ‘Agra Bazar’ stands as a testament to his creativity. Tanvir, who led ‘Naya Theatre’ from its inception in 1959 until his passing in 2009, was a multifaceted personality. His contributions to theatre extended beyond directing, as he was an active member of IPTA, Mumbai, in his early days and served as an editor and drama critic.
The play ‘Agra Bazar’ holds a special place in Tanvir’s repertoire, along with other notable productions such as ‘Mini Ki Gadi,’ ‘Charandas Chor,’ ‘Jin Lahore Nahi Vekhya,’ and ‘Rajrakt.’ Recognized for his exceptional contributions, Habib Tanvir received numerous awards, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Shikhar Samman for Drama, the Nandikar Award, the Padmashri, and the Padma Bhushan.
‘Agra Bazar’ weaves an intriguing narrative set in the bustling Agra Bazar, where a cucumber seller endeavours to boost sales by commissioning a poem extolling the virtues of his product. The storyline intertwines with the tale of a young vagabond pursuing a courtesan, leading to a dramatic and poignant climax at the hands of a rival.
The cultural event promises an evening of entertainment and reflection, showcasing the rich heritage of Indian theatre. Moreover, the entry to the play at PBMC Auditorium on February 10, 2024, at 5 pm, is free for all. The organizers extend a warm invitation to the public, encouraging everyone to witness the brilliance of ‘Agra Bazar,’ a theatrical masterpiece directed by the legendary Habib Tanvir.
