A surge in cyber-attacks has been detected, with hackers employing malicious browser extensions to compromise user data. The assailants utilize sophisticated social engineering tactics to deceive individuals into installing these malicious extensions, particularly targeting Gmail accounts. The malicious extensions are primarily distributed through phishing emails and are designed to infiltrate Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers, posing a severe threat to user privacy and security.

The Andaman and Nicobar Police have issued a comprehensive advisory to help users protect themselves from these cyber threats. The advisory includes the following key recommendations:

1. Regularly Review Installed Browser Extensions: Users are urged to regularly review and scrutinize the browser extensions installed on their systems. Any suspicious or unfamiliar extensions should be promptly identified and removed.

2. Exercise Caution with Email Attachments: Avoid installing any extension or software received through email communication. Cybercriminals often use phishing emails to distribute these malicious extensions, especially targeting Gmail users.

3. Download Extensions from Trusted Sources: Ensure that browser extensions are only downloaded from reputable sources, such as the Chrome Web Store or Mozilla add-ons. Avoid downloading from unknown or unverified platforms.

4. Exercise Caution with Emails from Unknown Senders: Users are advised against opening emails from unknown senders and refraining from downloading any attachments contained in such emails. These attachments may harbour malicious content.

5. Avoid Clicking on Suspicious Links: Exercise caution when dealing with links in emails or posts from unknown sources. Clicking on such links may lead to compromised websites and potential security breaches.

6. Install Antivirus Apps and Enable Google Play Protect: Enhance your smartphone’s security by installing reliable antivirus applications. Additionally, enable Google Play Protect to safeguard against potential threats.

7. Keep Software Up to Date: Regularly update your software to benefit from the latest bug fixes and security patches. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your system against evolving cyber threats.

The Andaman and Nicobar Police urge individuals to stay vigilant and adhere to these guidelines to enhance their cybersecurity posture. For further assistance, information, or inquiries, individuals are encouraged to contact the Cyber Crime Police Station in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands via the Cyber Helpline at No. 1930 or 9531856083.
