B.Tech Civil Engineering students of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (BRAIT) undertook an educational site visit to the 11.5 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Garacharma as part of experiential learning and outcome-based education (OBE) practices in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP).

The visit aimed to provide students with hands-on exposure to key water treatment processes essential for sustainable civil engineering practices. During the visit, students observed and studied the functioning of various treatment stages, including aeration, sedimentation, coagulation, clariflocculator units, rapid sand filtration and sludge removal. The exposure offered real-time insights into the operation of municipal water supply systems.

The academic activity was conceptualised as an innovative teaching pedagogy under OBE and NEP by Mr. Altamash Mustafa, Training and Placement Coordinator and Associate Dean, IQAC, BRAIT. The initiative was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom learning and practical field application.

The technical session and on-site demonstrations were facilitated by Ms. M. Priya, Junior Engineer (Civil), APWD, under the supervision of Mr. Sukhvinder Singh, Assistant Engineer, APWD, PHED. The officials explained operational challenges, quality control measures and highlighted the critical role of efficient water treatment in ensuring public health and supporting urban infrastructure.

The visit was described as a valuable learning experience, significantly enhancing students’ understanding of water treatment processes and water conservation practices, which are particularly relevant in the context of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
