Mr. Prahlad Singh, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Laxmi Nagar during the Induction Training of Newly Elected Panchayati Raj Members raised the demand for developing Great Nicobar as a destination for Cruise Ships.

During the interaction with the official from the Tourism Department of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. Prahlad Singh informed that Great Nicobar Island lies very close to a very popular and busy international shipping lane and every year several hundreds of cruise ships pass in proximity to the Island. The beauty of Great Nicobar is unmatched and the Island is home to several pristine and untouched beaches. Great Nicobar could be an ideal day destination for tourists onboard cruise ships.

Mr. Prahlad Singh demanded that Andaman and Nicobar Administration should take steps to attract cruise liners to Great Nicobar and develop the necessary infrastructure and facilities for tourists to enjoy their time on the Island.

Mr. Prahlad Singh while speaking to Nicobar Times informed that developing Great Nicobar as a day cruise destination will be a game changer for the local population. He added that it could be an immediate solution to the dwindling economy of the Island.

Mr. Prahlad Singh also informed that although the Govt. of India has big plans for Great Nicobar, but immediate solutions are also needed to boost the economy of the Island for the benefit of the local population.

The economy of Great Nicobar is currently dependent on Agriculture, but the distance of the Island from Port Blair and the Mainland is a major disadvantage as it increases the cost of transportation of the agricultural produce of the farmers.
