As part of the ongoing Animal Welfare Fortnight 2026 (January 14–30), the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services celebrated the auspicious festival of Mattu Pongal with devotion and enthusiasm at the Livestock Farm Complex (LFC), Dollygunj.

The celebration highlighted the revered role of cattle in agriculture, dairy production, rural livelihoods and the cultural heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As part of the traditional observances, cattle at the farm were ceremonially bathed, and their horns were painted and adorned with fresh flowers, garlands and traditional decorations. Special Pongal was prepared and offered to the animals as a symbolic gesture of gratitude for their invaluable contribution to farming, food security and the economy.

Dr. K. A. Naveen, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, attended the programme along with senior officers and staff of the department. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Naveen said that Mattu Pongal is not merely a festival but a reminder of society’s moral and ethical responsibility towards animals. He emphasized the need to ensure proper nutrition, timely healthcare, dignified living conditions and protection from cruelty for all animals.

The celebration reinforced the department’s commitment to promoting animal welfare and compassion, in line with the objectives of Animal Welfare Fortnight.
