In a major capacity-building initiative to enhance operational efficiency and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of departmental hatcheries across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) has commenced a comprehensive four-day training programme for hatchery operators.

The specialised training focuses on the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of generator sets (gensets) and incubators—critical equipment required to maintain a stable power supply and optimal hatching conditions in hatcheries. The programme is being conducted by experienced Electrical and Mechanical Engineers from the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), who are providing practical, hands-on guidance to the participants.

Hatchery operators from various departmental units are participating in the training. Key areas covered include safe handling of gensets, preventive maintenance practices, fuel management, load distribution, as well as incubator temperature and humidity control, calibration techniques, emergency protocols and basic repair methods aimed at minimising downtime during power outages or equipment failures.

The initiative reflects the Department’s continued commitment to strengthening the technical skills of its field staff. By enhancing operational expertise at the hatchery level, the programme is expected to improve hatchability rates, ensure a consistent supply of quality chicks and ducklings to farmers, and support backyard poultry development programmes, particularly in rural and tribal areas of the islands.

The four-day training programme will conclude on January 1, 2026, and is expected to equip hatchery operators with improved technical competence to manage hatchery operations more effectively and contribute to increased poultry production in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
