As part of the ongoing Animal Welfare Fortnight 2026 (January 14–30), the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services organised a colourful and well-attended Pet Walk on Saturday morning, drawing enthusiastic participation from pet owners and animal lovers across the town.

The event began at 6 a.m. from the Marina Park Gate, where Dr K. A. Naveen, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, flagged off the walk. Participants, accompanied by their pets, proceeded to Flag Point, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Many walkers carried placards and banners conveying messages on animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

Addressing the gathering at the conclusion of the walk, Dr Naveen emphasised the importance of humane and responsible management of pets and stray animals. He strongly encouraged the adoption of homeless dogs and cats from streets and shelters instead of purchasing costly breeds, noting that adoption helps save lives and reduces the problem of animal abandonment.

To acknowledge the participation and promote responsible pet care, the Department distributed pet care kits containing essential items to all participants.

The Pet Walk was one of several activities planned under Animal Welfare Fortnight. Upcoming programmes include veterinary health camps, painting competitions for schoolchildren, awareness sessions on animal first aid in schools, and exposure visits to departmental farms and institutions.
