Department of Disaster Management Organises Sensitisation Programme for 2nd Year MBBS Students of ANIIMS

The Department of Disaster Management has been regularly conducting various disaster preparedness programmes in different departments and institutions in the UT. The department has been conducting these preparedness programmes under the guidance of Director (Disaster Management), Dr. Nitin Shakya. The Department recently organised a sensitisation programme for the students of 2nd Year (MBBS) of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS) on Disaster Management & Preparedness at Directorate of Disaster Management.

The Assistant Director (Ops.), DDM Mr. T.K.S. Ajayan interacted with the students and briefed about various types of disasters and vulnerability profile of this UT. Islands are highly susceptible to disasters of varied intensities, though we cannot prevent the natural occurrence, but definitely with a holistic and a meticulous approach & plan, could mitigate the impact. 

The Sr. Consultant, DDM, Dr. Swapan Kumar Biswas elaborated on various preparedness mechanisms for community as well as institutions, to respond by themselves during emergencies or crisis. He also explained the functions of Disaster Management and State Emergency Operation Centre of the UT.

The Assistant Director (Log.), DDM, Mr. Gyan Singh explained the different aspects of disaster management viz. response, preparedness and mitigation strategies and also highlighted the basic Do’s and Don’ts for any eventuality. The role and responsibility of paramedics during the time of disaster was also explained.
