Dr. S. R. District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) has organised a three-day Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Mentors’ Training Programme for representatives from all nine Educational Zones of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The programme was inaugurated recently at Government Senior Secondary School, Mohanpura, and is being conducted from February 9 to 11.

The training aims to strengthen FLN practices across schools in the Islands and equip mentors with effective, child-centred strategies to improve foundational learning outcomes among students.

Ms. Sangeeta Chand, Principal of the State Institute of Education (SIE), Shiksha Sadan, attended the inaugural function as the chief guest. Addressing the participants, she underscored the importance of strong foundational education in the early years of a child’s life, stating that a robust base in literacy and numeracy is crucial for overall academic development.

During the inaugural session, organisers outlined the objectives and detailed schedule of the programme. Over the three days, resource persons are conducting sessions on child-centred pedagogy, effective classroom practices, use of teaching-learning materials, and assessment of foundational skills.

Mentors from all nine Educational Zones are participating in the training. They are expected to develop action plans to strengthen the implementation of FLN initiatives at both school and zonal levels.

The programme began with enthusiastic participation from attendees, reflecting a collective commitment to enhancing foundational education across the Islands.
