The Veterinary Hospital, Diglipur, in collaboration with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), organised a demonstration programme on integrated fish and duck farming at the fish-cum-duck pond of Ms. Pushpa Mondal, a progressive poultry and duck farmer from Subhashgram village.

The programme aimed to promote sustainable and cost-effective farming practices among local farmers. During the session, participants were educated on the benefits of integrating duck rearing with fish culture, wherein ducks are raised on or around fish ponds and their droppings act as natural manure. This process enhances pond fertilisation, boosts plankton production and supports improved fish growth, thereby increasing overall farm productivity.

The Senior Veterinary Officer of Veterinary Hospital, Diglipur, elaborated on key technical aspects of the integrated model, including the selection of suitable duck breeds, maintaining optimal stocking density, construction of low-cost duck sheds on pond bunds, and effective health management practices for ducks.

The demonstration witnessed active participation from 16 farmers, who showed keen interest in adopting the integrated farming system. As part of the initiative, duck feed, steel basins and steel buckets were provided to Ms. Pushpa Mondal to further strengthen and support her integrated farming activities.

Such demonstrations are expected to encourage diversification in farming practices and enhance income opportunities for rural households in the region.
