The Directorate of Economics & Statistics, A&N Administration, on 29th June 2025, celebrated Statistics Day with the theme ‘75 Years of National Sample Survey’ to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary statistician Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, widely regarded as the Father of Indian Statistics.

The event witnessed participation from statistical personnel across various line departments of the Administration. The celebration aimed to highlight the crucial role of statistics in policy-making and governance, while also paying tribute to Prof. Mahalanobis’ pioneering contributions in institutionalising statistical research and surveys in India.

Mr. Bappa Saha, Indian Statistical Service (ISS), Assistant Director, National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operation Division (FOD), Sri Vijaya Puram, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Mr. Saha also appreciated the dedication of statistical professionals in ensuring the quality and reliability of data collection through systematic sampling techniques under the aegis of the NSO.

Welcoming the chief guest and participants, Mr. Gaurang Mishra, Director, Directorate of Economics & Statistics, underscored the importance of the day, stating that Statistics Day is not merely a celebration but a reaffirmation of the ongoing commitment to promoting statistical literacy across sectors.
