District Child Protection Unit of North & Middle Andaman organized an awareness programme to mark ‘World Day Against Child Labour’ at the Gram Panchayat Hall in Pokkadera. The event, held under the guidance of Mr. Dilkhush Meena, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman (N&MA), aimed at raising awareness and mobilising community efforts to combat child labour.

Mr. Dilkhush Meena, the Deputy Commissioner, served as the chief guest, while the Superintendent of Police (D), N&MA, Ms. Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, was the guest of honour. The event also saw the presence of the Assistant Labour Commissioner of Rangat, Mr. Suranjan Mukhopadhyay.

In his keynote address, Mr. Meena emphasized the critical importance of ensuring that all children are free from the burdens of labour and are able to pursue their education and dreams. “We must unite in our efforts to eradicate child labour and ensure a brighter future for every child. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and exploitation,” he stated.

Ms. Khandelwal highlighted the essential role of law enforcement in protecting children from exploitation and stressed the need for community vigilance. “The fight against child labour requires stringent enforcement of laws and active participation from the community. Together, we can protect our children and uphold their rights,” she said.

A highlight of the event was the cultural activities and a skit performed by children, which creatively illustrated the negative impact of child labour and the transformative power of education. These performances not only entertained but also educated the audience, effectively conveying the day’s message.

To encourage the participants, mementos were awarded to the children who performed in the cultural activities. The event saw participation from a diverse group, including children, Anganwadi Workers, ASHA Workers, community members, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), and members of the Auto and Jeep Association of Mayabunder, all of whom played a vital role in the programme’s success.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of the organisers, participants, and everyone who contributed to the success of the programme.
