District Election Machinery in South Andaman Gears Up for General Elections-2024

The District Election machinery in South Andaman has swung into action following the announcement of the General Elections-2024 schedule by the Commission. Led by Mr. Arjun Sharma, IAS, District Election Officer, various preparatory tasks have been initiated in a bid to ensure a smooth, free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

In line with the Election Commission of India’s directives, Mr. Arjun Sharma convened several crucial meetings on 18th March 2024, aimed at disseminating the latest instructions and guidelines to key stakeholders. These meetings were attended by representatives from the press and print media, printing press owners, and political parties.

The briefing session with the press and media, was attended by Ms. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, Superintendent of Police (D) of South Andaman District, she emphasized the pivotal role of the media in upholding the integrity of the electoral process. Mr. Sharma highlighted the significance of adhering to the Model Code of Conduct, which came into effect with the announcement of the election schedule. He urged press and media representatives to remain vigilant and assist the District Office in ensuring the conduct of elections without any bias or interference.

Addressing concerns regarding law and order, Superintendent Niharika Bhatt assured attendees that adequate security measures had been put in place to prevent any disruptions during the electoral process.

Subsequently, the meeting with printing press owners shed light on the stringent guidelines set forth by the Election Commission regarding the printing of campaign materials. Mr. Sharma emphasized the need for strict compliance with Section 127-A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which outlines restrictions on printing pamphlets and posters during elections. He stressed the importance of maintaining a level playing field and clarified any doubts or queries raised by participants.

The final session involved discussions with representatives from political parties. Mr. Sharma apprised them of the Commission’s instructions regarding the Model Code of Conduct and election expenditure monitoring. He urged political parties to adhere strictly to these guidelines to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process. Individual concerns and queries raised by party members were patiently addressed, ensuring clarity and understanding among all participants.
