The District Industries Centre (DIC) under the Department of Industries has been designated as the nodal agency for implementing the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act across the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In line with the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises’ (MSME) push for improving the Ease of Doing Business, the government has introduced Udyam Registration, a simplified registration process aimed at reducing both the time and costs involved for businesses.
The Udyam Registration initiative targets Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and mandates re-registration for all businesses already registered with the District Industries Centre in various categories, such as Small Scale Industries (SSI), Entrepreneurs Memorandums, and Udyog Aadhaar Memorandums.
As per the MSMED Act 2006, the term ‘Enterprise’ encompasses any industrial undertaking, business concern, or establishment engaged in the manufacturing or production of goods as outlined in the First Schedule of the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act, 1951. Additionally, enterprises providing or rendering services also fall under this definition.
The re-registration under Udyam is exclusive to existing businesses that have already commenced production or service operations. Proposed or upcoming units are not eligible for this process. Importantly, the DIC has clarified that the Udyam Registration service is only available through the official government portal, and no private entities are authorised to offer this service. Entrepreneurs are advised to avoid private portals that claim to provide MSME registration services, as the registration process through the official portal is free of cost.
