The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs successfully organised the District-Level Athletic Meet–2026 on February 4 and 5, 2026, at the Netaji Stadium Sports Complex, Sri Vijaya Puram. The two-day event witnessed enthusiastic participation from school students of Classes I to XII, athletes in the above-18 Open Men and Women categories, and senior citizens.
In a notable first, the Department also conducted the 1st District-Level Athletic Meet for Senior Citizens (Men and Women), featuring various athletic events. The senior citizens’ segment drew appreciable participation and added a unique and inspiring dimension to the meet.
One of the key highlights of the programme was a Yoga demonstration by primary school students, which drew wide appreciation from participants and spectators alike. Officials stated that such events would continue to be organised to encourage young athletes across the Union Territory and provide them opportunities to progress to national-level competitions.
Winners across all categories were felicitated with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals along with cash prizes. In the Senior Citizen category, the championship trophy in the men’s section was awarded to Mr. A. Babu Swamy, while Ms. A. Nagarathinam clinched the championship trophy in the women’s section.
Mr. Gyan Sheel Dubey, Head of Office, Directorate of Education, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and presented medals to the winners. The event saw the participation of around 700 athletes from schools, colleges and youth groups across South Andaman, while about 40 senior citizens took part in the competitions.
The successful conduct of the meet reflected the Department’s commitment to promoting sports culture and encouraging participation across all age groups in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
